John Boasi graduated in May with a master of science in global affairs. He is currently working at the National Field Network in Howell, NJ.

Chelsea Bosch is recently engaged and a May 2014 wedding is set! Chelsea is currently in her third year of teaching in AACPS and is working on her masters in Leadership in Mathematics at UMBC.

Nicholas Case is currently employed by AAI Corporation in Hunt Valley, MD as an Information Assurance Engineer.

Emily Cucchi got engaged to Kyle Raines and a June 2014 wedding is set! Emily is an Assistant Account Executive at DPR Group.

Travis Harrant received a promotion in May 2013 to 1LT. He is now the Maintenance Control Officer for a Field Artillery unit in Fort Stewart, GA.

Briannica Harper, now Briannica Harper- Sampson, is an IT Programmer Technician at Cinetic Landis Corp. Since graduation Briannica has welcomed three children into the world; two daughters and one son.

Kristen Harris is currently pursuing a Masters in Social Work with a concentration in clinical and a specialization in mental health specialization from the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work in Baltimore.

Tyler Hislop is a Licensing Specialist with mortgage company, NewDay USA.

April Hoffman is a first year medical student at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. April will graduate in 2017.

Morgan Lyons is in her third year teaching with Baltimore City. Morgan is currently educating kindergarteners with autism at The William S. Baer School in Baltimore City.

Kayla Murphy is recently engaged to Mathew Caw while in San Francisco. A fall 2015 wedding is planned!

Ken Rupert received Board Certification as Mater Christian Life Coach and founded The Vita-Copia Group; which provides life coaching for care givers of children with special needs and disabled seniors; specifically including financial mentoring and estate and life management planning. Ken is also an author of four books; Planned Excellence: How to Achieve Greatness through Strategic Planning, Strategic Goals: The DNA of Personal Success, The Dynamics of Abundant Life: Living a Life of Purpose and Meaning, and 10 Ways to Improve Your Retirement Planning: Behavioral Changes that Make a Difference. Ken also has plans of writing five additional titles in 2014! He is currently blogging for The Frederick News Post and Carrol County Times. On top of those additional responsiblities, Ken writes a monthly column for the Hampstead Life magazine. Ken is a member of both the International Chritian Coach’s Association and the American Association of Christian Counselors.

Patrick Yoo is currently a Program/Project Control Analyst at STG, Inc. in Reston, VA. Patrick is also the assistant varsity basketball coach at JEB Stuart HS in Falls Church, VA.

Here’s the “latest and greatest” from Hood86!

Katrina Anderson moved back to Manchester by the Sea, MA almost three years ago from Minneapolis, MN and works at Salem State University in the School of Social Work. She also volunteers as the elementary school PTO Treasurer and serves on two town committees.  Her kids are now 13, 11 and 9 and doing great.  Over the summer they visited Anne Lamoureux and her family in the DC area and had a great time!

Chrysti Hogan and her wife, Jeanne, are hoping to take an Alaskan cruise next summer to celebrate Chrysti’s 50th birthday and their 20th anniversary.  Dagmar Kolarik wrote that her business is doing really well.  Since she started her home furnishing workroom ten years ago, all her clients are recommended by other clients with whom she had previously worked.  However, in 2014, she plans to display her work in downtown Frederick and expand the business, Dagmar’s Décor. As Dagmar says, “Family is fine: four parents, one husband, two children, one son-in-law and two grandchildren.”  Kathryn Neel lives in New Smyrna Beach, FL these days and works as a freelance computer consultant.  When she’s not working on computer stuff, she paddleboards and volunteers at Canaveral National Seashore.

Laura Nipps Gardner still lives in New Hampshire and loves that they’ve been there 19.5 years! She works for the Merrimack School District as a Paraeducator and is very happy. Daughter Mollie just started high school (she plays soccer) and daughter Alexa is in 7th grade (she plays basketball).  Both are taller than Laura – taking after Greg! They took a fabulous family trip to Europe this past summer and Laura is still sorting through her photos. Mari Padilla Spina sends in her update: “Life has been crazy here with work and the kids. It’s hard to believe that we are starting college visits for Alexa, a junior in high school. Nicholas keeps us busy with his basketball.  I recently had lunch with Mari Martinez ’87 – there is nothing better than Hood sisters! Gina Oliveros and I are already planning our 50th birthdays!

Mercedes Pellet and her husband sold their business – M2 Limited – in 2006 and retired to Garrett County, Maryland. They joined HART for Animals, Inc., an animal-welfare organization that rescues animals from shelters and transports them to places to be adopted. Together, they raised funds to build an animal adoption center that would give more animals a chance. HART is opening that Animal Center in January 2014. HART has saved 6,000 cats and dogs, and has spayed/neutered 4,500 animals at its low-cost clinic in McHenry, Maryland.

Betsy Reed Ringel met up with Jennifer Lee Matts and Cindy Leitz Hurley ‘87 in Morristown for lunch recently. The Matts & Ringel families shared a vacation in 2012 to see the Navy-Notre Dame football game in Dublin (and sightseeing in Killarney). This year, Chad graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and is a chemical engineer with an adhesives company.  Elise is a freshman at Loyola in Baltimore and Caroline is a sophomore in high school. Jeff and I are getting used to a bit more free time and just celebrated our 27th anniversary.

Cameron Soulis sends some of the best news: “Well, this is certainly a big year for me!  I’m in my last year of seminary, I am to be ordained (God willing), I’m getting married, and I hope to start a new job next summer after graduation.  And it’s all happening between my 49th and 50th birthdays!  Nothing like starting my 5th decade of life with a bang.  Please know that I’d greatly appreciate your prayers and good thoughts (if you’re not the prayin’ sort) for my ordination.”

On a personal note, Christina Hom Wilson, Stacey Robins Baum, and I visited with Stephanie Carlson Murray ‘88 (Stacey’s little sis from Hood) in September, shortly before Stephanie’s death from cancer in October 2013.  It was a bittersweet trip and we felt so blessed to have been able to spend that time with Stephanie.  Please keep her daughter, Courtney, and Stephanie’s family in your prayers.  I continue to work at a local winery and pen two blogs… Michael and I love living in Richmond VA.  Older son, Drew (Hood 12) is in grad school for a Masters in Athletic Training and younger son, Evan, is a “fourth year” at UVA.  Would love to hear from you all… email me or reach me via FB anytime!

Louray Forney Huang is slow and lazy but teaching Sunday school and lifting weights. She was looking forward to a family reunion in Hawaii at Christmas. Her son who teaches law at the Univ. of Hawaii climbed to the base camp of Mt. Everest. Lorraine Ihlefeldt Bulba attended her 70th high school reunion and visited Washington, D.C. to visit the Smithsonian Museum where her granddaughter works. At her reunion, she saw Peggy Thumma Startzman who also called to tell me that Lois Groh Unger was at the same class reunion. Lois has given up golf due to arthritis, but walks with her husband for exercise. Peggy walks, plays games on the computer and visits with her two children who live near her. Marty Knouse Schaeffer went to see Les Miserables at a local dinner theater and their waiter/actor turned out to be a graduate of Hood’s class of 2005. Mel Weir Peter was returning to Naples, Fla., after her summer in Shaker Heights, Ohio. She enjoys living there close to two daughters. She was hoping to see Elizabeth “Jonesie” Hesse while she was there. Phyl Peak Sullivan and her husband went on a cruise up the East Coast stopping at Bar Harbor, St. Johns and Halifax. They planned to go to the Outer Banks in November and after the holidays head for Florida. In March, they will become great-grandparents! Phyl is giving up golf and maybe choir, but is healthy and Sully’s Macular degeneration is not any worse. Harriet Green Scott enjoys living in the Baptist home (even though she is an Episcopalian) and keeps busy with the food bank and playing bridge. She has also given up golf. Renie Quynn Colmus spent three weeks in Germany with her daughter and family; Cathy came back with her for a three week visit. She is still driving and gets shots in her eyes for Macular degeneration. She meets Hood friends for lunch every month: Louray Forney Huang, Vera Peters and Phyllis Tibbitts Lind who use a wheel chair. Elsbeth Graf Smith, a high school classmate of mine (Kitty Smith Dunn) in Lancaster, attended our 70th reunion. She lives near Lancaster in a “grandmother’s apartment” while her daughter and son-in-law live in the main house where she and her husband raised their five children––one lives in Colorado, two in California, one in Maryland and one near her. Peggy Lashinsky Thompson lives in her home with her son who is a lawyer; a daughter is close by. Peggy’s training as a medical technologist comes in handy as she has diabetes. She has a walker and keeps occupied reading and watching TV. Mary Lib Reeder Tiller also uses a walker to get around, but is still a master gardener. She has neighbors who are very helpful. Joan Staunton Fitting is retiring as an archivist for her Solesbury Township, but belongs to a book club and goes on long walks with her husband and new dog.  She keeps in touch with Madeline Aldrin Crwell who lives in Oklahoma, but visits the East Coast to see her daughter.  She and Jo get together at that time. Maddy is in good health. Sally Golden McDonald lives on the farm that she and her husband worked for many years. All the animals are gone except for the cats and a peacock. Sally’s five children are scattered from California to New Hampshire and Massachusetts. One daughter lives with Sally; she has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is a great reader and goes through four to five books a week. Nancy Fox Moorehead lives in Pensacola, Fla., 45-minutes away from one daughter. Another daughter lives in Atlanta, Ga., and a son lives in Baltimore, Md. After living 50-some-years in the Philadelphia area, Nancy moved into a retirement community in Florida to be closer to a daughter. One of her memories from living in Pennsylvania was representing Hood at the installation of the President of Rosemont College. Hood sent her the cap, gown and Hood to wear to the ceremony. Laura Eaton Butler moved into a retirement home a year ago and has been without a computer. Don has very advanced emphysema and needs more care than she could give. It is a different life, but they are adjusting after 30 years. Laura retired as a docent at the Huntington Library and art gallery and misses it. She said her legs are starting to go. Don has Macular degeneration and they visit the doctor frequently. Ginger Dyer Smith lives in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and playing 18 holes of golf three times a week. She travels to see her son and four daughters who live in California, Massachusetts, Florida, South Carolina and Virginia. She has been a eucharistic minister at her church for 30-years and a lay reader for 28. She sees Lois Piper Dagleish who also lives in Myrtle Beach and said she is in good health and keeps busy. “Your reporter, Kitty Smith Dunn, remains in her home with a son and a married granddaughter nearby who is expecting her first child in January which will give me my third great-grandchild. The other two little boys live near Philadelphia. With my vision problems, I am cutting back and giving up doing taxes. My bell choir folded due to lack of interest, but I am still singing with the Lehigh Univ. Choral Union and visiting at a local hospital weekly for the pastoral care office.  Thanks to all who provided news––I grieve with all those whose “Hoodlums” left this life. I remember talking with all those whose names were listed in the last bulletin. We add to that list Betty Grissinger and Julie Allen Hancock.”

Carolyn Cantagalli Dumaresq was recently promoted to Acting Secretary of Education for Pennsylvania, capping off 45 years in education. In her spare time she shows Border Collies in agility. Christine Lundt Lambertus suffered a broken foot in May, but despite the inconvenience of a “boot” managed to travel to Ireland and Scotland with her husband and their church group. Also in Ireland over the summer, meeting with local Ingoldsbys and genealogists, was Joanne Ingoldsby Peters. Penney Weatherby Brown and husband John are involved in a major remodeling of their master BR and bath. In July they attended the Grapehound Wine Festival at Seneca Lake, NY. Sadly she reports that Libby Marckwardt Oliver had a stroke in September. She is now home but faces vascular surgery in the near future. Marty Silcox Hankins continues to teach at the Odyssey School for children with language-based learning difficulties. As a sideline she and her husband have a pottery business in Hampstead – see www.shilohpottery.com. Maureen Clancy is still focused on her website “Matters of Taste” as well as occasional freelancing. Both sons joined her and husband T for a trip to Spain in early summer. Jill Stanley, who lives in Alaska, takes the prize for the busiest August. Her daughter was married in Portland, OR on Aug. 4 and her husband’s daughter tied the knot in Savannah, GA a week later! Nancy vom Eigen Rasmussen writes that she and 4 classmates – Sandra Jung Vrem, Nancy Roe Hebdon, Martha Mulford Gray, Linda Stockdale Warren plus Linda Walls Bradley (70), and assorted husbands, including Guy Gray ( ) had a mini- Hood reunion (their 8th) at an historic farmhouse on Whidbey Island, WA. in late August. Despite battling a rare autoimmune disease for which there is no cure Carol Wyman Harris continues working part-time in non-profit fundraising. Christine Diehl retired from teaching after 37 years and is now an adjunct professor at a community college in New Haven, CT. Punkie Van Wert VanAs had a nice visit with Ginny Williams Confer when she was in Jacksonville for a horse show. Both Libby Markwardt Oliver and Penney Weatherby Brown visited with Sue Korff Hammer at her farm and were quite comfortable around her alpacas. Sue and three other former Terrace House residents – Mary Louise Wittkofski O’Brien, Debbie Dick Holbert, and Barb Hoagland Ziegler got together at Sue Taylor Shoch’s cottage overlooking Swan Pond in Dennisport (Cape Cod.) They were joined by Ruth Conger Crespi (’67). Following retirement Bonnie Martin Plankey and her husband Frank spent 6 weeks in Australia and New Zealand. Then health issues intervened – a cardiac ablation procedure for Bonnie and kidney failure for Frank. He had a kidney transplant in September and is now doing well. Travels can resume. They have great support from their 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. Since Sarah Jane Snyder Raffety’s husband retired, she has been discovering how to manage a serious back problem with therapy, water aerobics and traction. Ginny Monaco Hatfield has turned into a professional volunteer following retirement from political life a decade ago, primarily maintaining a one person immigration consulting firm in LA. She and husband Paul have a vacation home on Lake Tahoe’s North Shore. Daughter Jeni has moved back to LA. Pat Warren Carlson welcomed second granddaughter, Lauren, to the family Oct. 21st. She delights in early morning day-care of big sister Brooke. Though retired, Pat still teaches master’s and doctoral classes at Delaware State Univ. Carol Crofoot Hayes recently had her daughter Lisa and one-year-old twin granddaughters visit with her in Bluffton, SC. Since the spring she’s traveled to the South of France, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Ireland, and the Pacific Northwest. Cynthia Werner Biber recently graduated from Seton Hall Univ. and has worked at the Frick Collection in NYC for 9 years. She has 3 children and 2 “greats.” I Sayre Roney Steere am enjoying my new position as Asst. District II Director within the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, although it entails frequent trips to Orlando for meetings. Both daughters and 3 granddaughters flew in for a visit from the West Coast in June. Dave and I had a grand time exploring Steamboat Springs, CO in August.

Class News For 1963

Well, Ladies of ’63, there is some good news and some bad, so I’ll start with the bad.  We learned of the death of Marcia Kerr Quill, a staunch Hood supporter, married to Jerry, (from Frederick) for 50 years.  She was also the mother of Kevin and Shannon and grandmother of two.  Early on, Marcia used her lit degree from Hood as a copywriter.  Most of her life, however, was devoted to philanthropic endeavors such as raising funds for the William Penn Charter School, organizing art exhibitions, singing in choirs and playing some excellent tennis with the Philadelpia Cricket Club. Jerry wrote a tribute to Marcia in which he said she treated everyone as her equal and was greatly loved.   I know she and I would have had a lot to talk about, so I’m doubly sorry that I did not call her about the reunion.  Our sympathies, Jerry.  Lots of news from Katherine “Kathy” VanTine Harford. Kathy says,  “Geoff and I have been married for 46 years.  Our son Jarred is a professor of finance at the University of Washington inSeattle, is married to Katrina, and they have two sons.  Justin owns a contracting company here in State College and was married to Ashley last August.  Geoff and I retired 10 years ago from Penn State where Geoff was the senior director of admissions and I was an event and conference planner for hospitality services.  Unlike most contemporaries who are down sizing, we upsized. We had been in a townhouse for 42 years, and in 2011, son Justin, the contractor, convinced us to build a house.  We love the change and the extra room.”  (I thought I had done well to buy a $1000 vacuum cleaner from my son.)   According to Carolyn Matusiewski Cannava, Alaska had a warm and sunny summer bringing lots of visitors including daughter Tara ’87, and her twins who live in Seattle,  son James, a pediatric dentist in Whitefish, Montana,  and friends of her late sister Teddy ’61.   Carolyn was kept busy with nine grandchildren, seven of which attend the elementary school where Carolyn was principal for 18 years.  Sounds like a legacy! Wow! Sally Schaeffer Morse and Al took the Queen Mary II to Southhampton, England, and then spent a week in London in September, a lovely trip.   Sue Olpp Remsberg wants to say one more time what a great reunion weekend we had and to thank everyone once again for your monetary contributions.  Sue Coulton Gibbons enjoyed an amazing trip to Israel and plans to visit what used to be East Germany.  She’s keeping her girlish figure by exercising and loving the vegetarian life.  She is still  a volunteer coordinator  (800 volunteers) at her very large church.  Brenda Eklund Pearson has traveled to India for three weeks with her Friendship Force group.  I hope they missed the floods. Pat Taylor Santelli always has interesting news. Unfortunately, Pat has lost her job as an independent contractor after 32 years.  She’s hoping for a part time job soon “to keep her out of trouble”.  Her youngest son, a USNA grad, James, returned from his third deployment on the USS Florida, a guided missle sub, then got reassigned to shore duty in Hawaii  with Naval Intelligence Ops.  In September he and his bride, Carla, were married at the USNA and had the pomp and pagentry of exiting under the sword arch.  Their wedding was attended by many guests including Pat’s other three children and their families. James and Carla have a two year honeymoon in Kaneohe, Hawaii.  Gee, we know where Pat’s next vacation will be!  As for me, Dottie Snyder Engle,  we had our annual trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and I visited son Ryan in California for ten days, where he and I took a two day trip to Big Sur. Love that gorgeous Pacific Coast?  Robin won a dispute with the state over having her schedule changed.  She claimed extreme OCD and that, according to the Americans With Disibilities Act, she should be given a resonable accommodation, one half hour difference in her schedule, same one she had for 15 years.  She and I had a fruitful shopping trip to NYC where my credit cards got canceled since I hadn’t notified  them that I’d be traveling.  After being torn up for three months, the kitchen floor is ready for the next reunion and so am I.  Keep your news coming.

Hello from the Class of 2013! Thank you to those who provided exciting news to share in our first column for the Hood Magazine. In the months since graduation, we have been a busy bunch. Many of our classmates are pursing Master’s degrees, a number of us are working with different organizations, and we have many engagements and marriages to celebrate!

Congratulations are in order for Sarah Hering who is engaged to Shawn McNalley ’12 and is looking forward to a July 2014 wedding; Kimi Brunot who is engaged to Brian Humphreys; Nicole Crutchfield who will be marrying Trevor Tabbachino in April; and Travis Kerr who is recently engaged to Jessica Becker ’12. Congratulations to newlyweds Ashley Darling Genova and Brent Genova who were married this past August. All the best!

Kellie Duncan is working as a youth counselor for Pride of America Cruise Line in Hawaii; Kate Adams is teaching third grade at Glenn Dale Elementary School; Justin Stone is teaching fourth grade at Emmitsburg Elementary School; and Ashley Darling Genova is the marketing and promotions manager at Godfrey’s Farm in Sudlersville, Md. Jeffery Reichert is now working for Interfaith Housing Alliance as their administrative support; Bridgitte McColligan is a performance technology coordinator for The Advisory Board; Kasey Johnson is working as a field archaeologist for R. Christopher Goodwin and Associates; Melayne Newman is an account coordinator with Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group; and Kimi Brunot is as an administrative assistant for Vintage Security. Nicole Crutchfield is working as a rehabilitation counselor for youth; Amanda Kessler is working at Clearspring Elementary School as the resource and learning center teacher; and William Lewis is working for Red Horse Strategies in New York City. Meghan Hauenstein is working as an infant teacher in California and just celebrated her son’s first birthday! She is headed back to the classroom as a student to receive her teaching certification. Alexander Smith is working as an administrative assistant at Glenwood Academy and Nilsa Gonzalez is working at The Whole Self Center with their intensive individual support services. Sarah Hering and her fiancé Shawn McNalley ’12 have landed their dream jobs. Sarah is teaching Kindergarten at Lewistown Elementary School and Shawn is working for Suburban Video media company. Olivia Wolz is now working for Affiliated Computer Services; Jasmine Woolard is putting her biology degree to use as a quality control technician at Medimmune; and Kacie Stuckey is working as a kindergarten instructional assistant at C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School and will be going back to school to receive her teaching certification. We will be saying ‘bon voyage’ to Will Lane and Nick Mudgett in early 2014 as they embark on their service as Peace Corps volunteers in Ecuador and Nicaragua, respectively. Until their departures, Will is a research and development intern at Evapco and Nick is the marketing specialist for Taxware.

Spencer Knoll is pursuing a Juris Doctorate at the University of Maryland School of Law. Kimi Brunot is also in Baltimore pursuing a Master’s degree in counseling psychology at Loyola University in Maryland. Dallas Tolbard is pursuing a Pharm.D at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Throughout the United States we have Nicole Crutchfield in the social work Master’s program at St. Leo University in Florida; Alex Winter in Illinois pursuing a Master’s in biological sciences at Eastern Illinois University; Ashley Birdsell who is pursuing a Master’s of fine arts in performing arts management at Brooklyn College in New York City; and Deryka Nairne in the higher education and student affairs administration Master’s program at the University of Vermont. Across the pond, Travis Kerr is studying Immunology at the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and Blair Starnes is pursuing a Master’s of Science in forensic mental health at the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London.

When you come back to visit campus, you will see a number of us keeping busy at Hood. MeMe Brown is pursuing a Master’s of Business Administration and is the graduate assistant to Rev. Beth O’Malley. Andrew Bodine is the assistant manager for the aquatics center and the assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach; Breanne Carbaugh is enjoying her time in the Thanatology program and I, Elaheh Eghbal, am serving as the AmeriCorps*VISTA member in the career center and enjoying my Master of Business Administration class.

Although our time as undergraduate students has passed, the memories we made at Hood will keep us tied forever. Continue to make your mark Class of 2013 and keep in touch! Cheers!

Reunion Weekend is June 6-8, 2014. Please plan to attend our 60th reunion! Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Lois White Lowry, who died of a stroke September 19 2013. She was in Washington to receive a Fellowship award. Alice Avanozian Arana and Ozzie have been living in the senior community of Morningside in Fullerton, Calif., for 4 years, enjoying the beautiful grounds, wonderful staff and food. “On a clear day we can see Mt. Baldy from our balcony. We have many activities both physical and mental to keep us entertained and alive. Due to some health problems Ozzie is having, we have curtailed our travels––last one to Peru is in March,” said Alice. After completing 9 editions of “Puntos de Partida” workbooks for McGraw-Hill they decided to pass the baton on to the next generation. Jean Baker Weikert and Mark celebrated their first anniversary. Congratulations! Mark is doing well and now able to resume playing golf after his spring heart attack. For relaxation they continue to Ballroom dance. Granddaughter Kelsey Miller is teaching in Seoul, Korea and then on to Thailand in November and granddaughter Erin Haafke is a sophomore at Mansfield Univ. majoring in music. Grandson David Abrams will graduate from Shippensburg Univ. and be commissioned in the service this spring. Jean also mentioned that Joanne Wagner Tolbert’s husband Rod passed away late last year. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tolbert family. Barbara Coleman lives in Oceanside, Calif., enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. Daughter Valerie and two grandsons live in South Carolina. Barbara is in negotiation for publishing her book. It concerns her years at the White House under four presidents and her eight years on television with “Here’s Barbara.” She interviewed the Who’s Who of Washington and also other celebrities. Publishing has changed and it is more difficult to make a good arrangement. Janet Edelstein Ettinger is in good health by exercise and keeping busy. A new grandson Baylor is a joy and a 9-year-old granddaughter makes happy family times. Betsy Gary Guthridge’s 24-year-old grandson has just returned from Prague and Czechoslovakia where he spent six months coaching baseball.  While there his father, mother, sister and several friends joined him for travel around the area. Pat Sabin Sprague loves living in Colorado. She can ski in winter and swim all year in a local heated pool. Son Ted and family live in California. There is an 8-year-old grandson and a 6-month-old granddaughter Caroline. Pat visits California each summer and heads to Oregon enjoying the beauty until autumn. She still uses her writing skills and completes a newsletter for a charity. Kaye Petersen Boothman was recovering from spinal stenosis surgery. She feels very fortunate to have a husband who cooks and cleans up. For the following six to eight weeks, Kaye was looking forward to relaxing and reading without guilt. Her book club was meeting at her home and they brought the nibbles. Jane Hinkle Stockdale has moved to a retirement facility in Lancaster, Pa. She ran into Anne Smith Knoll and Ralph living in the same facility. They enjoy cocktails and dinner together occasionally. Husband Wendell reported at least ten other Naval Academy graduates there. Their 52-year-old son passed away last year of a massive heart attack. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Daughter Janell Stockdale Pentz ’78 is a Hood graduate from the class of 1978. Two grandsons will graduate in the spring––one from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania and the second from Penn State Univ. in State College, Pa. She spoke recently with Anne Lyon Canon and Donna McDowell Boswell who mentioned they had moved into a “cruise in the middle of a corn field.” Anne Smith Knoll and Ralph enjoy retirement. She plays golf, bridge and many activities, lectures and music programs. The sons are scattered in Maine, Delaware, Georgia and Iowa. They are blessed with seven grandchildren (all girls) and six great-grandchildren, five girls and one boy. Both Jane and Anne mentioned that Joanne McCune Horton ’53 also resides at Willow Valley. Anne Lyon Canon likes living at Avondell Retirement Community. She gets around with a walker, but cannot overdo it. “I do miss living in Frederick, close to Hood. Here in Bel Air, Md., my daughter Ellen Bareford took my granddaughter Grace to a College night and Hood was represented. Grace became very interested in Hood and thinks she would like to attend. I would love for her to go. It would be the perfect college for her. She is a junior at Bel Air High School. I told her Hood girls are good girls!” Marilyn Ogden Heath and Alan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August not   long after Alan had open-heart surgery to replace the mitral valve. The surgery was successful and his recuperation is progressing well. Toby, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a service dog (hearing assistance dog) for Alan, accompanied them to the hospital and into the intensive care unit. All three children have visited and helped out with the recuperation. “To wrap up the year, in December, she was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the United States Dressage Federation at the annual convention in Lexington, Ky.! My involvement in dressage judge education is being recognized. I enjoy educating others to become judges that I feel it is reward enough, however, it is nice to be recognized––it is truly the icing on the cake,” said Marilyn. Donna McDowell Boswell reported, “It is not an exciting news item, but then I do not live an exciting life, busy at times and uninteresting other times. I still have my Montessori preschool, which was started 37-years ago when I was trying to find something to do where I would have my summers off. I am still actively involved, at least three days a week, which can be a challenge. I enjoy all my children and grandchildren especially in the summer at my home in Ocean City, N.J., where they all enjoy the sand, sea breezes and surf. All three families will be cruising with me (one at a time) this winter somewhere warm. I am looking forward to leaving the cold weather, which has never appealed to me. Lastly, Mahjong is now one of my addictions as is knitting. I try hard with this last hobby, but keep falling off the yarn wagon,” said Donna. Jane Stockdale and Donna were planning to get together in November for lunch. Jane Dickenson Glass passed away in April 2013. Betsy Oehrle reported, “My last email from dear Jane was her response to my message for her to listen to Bono on the TED sight and hear him speak about ending poverty. Jane wrote, “Wow, he is really something else again!” I say the same for Jane, my roommate of 3 years at Hood. A phone call from my family in Pittsburgh gave me this very sad, unexpected and shocking news. We were in constant contact on email and we always met when I returned to Pittsburgh.  Jane’s final words to me in her special birthday wish for my 80th was, “…we are still friends no matter how far away or how long it has been and how far apart we are. I shall always have memories of friendship, laughter and music and that’s a good thing!” Rest in peace Jane, til we meet again.” My heartfelt thanks to all who have answered the call for news! I hope you will continue the tradition. I have enjoyed knowing where you are and what you are doing. It has been good to hear by email and to speak with so many. I hope to attend Reunion and look forward to seeing many of you!

Hi, I am Lucy Song Gilbart and I am one of the class reporters.  My family just moved to Middletown, MD.  We have 2 wonderful girls , age 7 and 11. We also have 2 most adorable small dogs-Cupcake and Angel cake (both are Shih Tzu).  My husband and I are both dentists, we work in Frederick and Hagerstown.  I hope everyone is having an enjoyable year and keep in touch.  I can be reached at lucygilbart@yahoo.com.

Wendy Bowen Callahan returned to school in 2008, and she graduated from the Teacher Intern Program at Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA, in May of 2010. For the past three years she has worked as a middle school math resource teacher, and this year she started a position as a 6th grade math teacher in Carroll County, MD.

Sarah Adams Strikovski is starting her 19^th year of teaching this year, and she currently teachies at Ridgely Middle in Lutherville, Maryland.  She and her husband, Fedya, self employed and recently promoted to First Lieutenant in the Maryland National Guard, are celebrating 16 years of marriage  Together,they have a daughter, Anna Katerina, who is about to celebrate her 10^th birthday. Sarah and Fedya recently bought a house built circa1732 house in Fallston, Maryland that they are in the process of restoring, and their adventures on their 5 acre homestead are chronicled in Sarah’s blog, www.ankinprood.wordpress.com. Sarah also still keeps in touch with Lauren Janey Wolf and they reminisce about Hood and the sisterhood they shared there quite often.

Pam Borden Heckert and Clark’s oldest child Win married Kristin Iacobucci on October 4, 2013 in Philadelphia. They are a videographer and photographer respectively and had plenty of documentation at the end of the weekend! Pam and Clark enjoy visits with 3 year old granddaughter Madeline. In May Kate Healy Drummond, Wendy Erway, Pam and their husbands met for dinner and vowed not to allow another 40 years to pass before meeting again!

Candace Dudden and her husband Jim Schweitzer travel a lot.  They recently vacationed in northern Idaho and Sedona AZ and are planning trips to Carlsbad, CA and Alaska.  Jim is retired from both the USAF and the San Antonio, Texas public school system.  Candace has been a RN for 30+ years working in administration and organ transplant, and is now retired and working 40 hours/week for hospice.  Her 2 sons, Brian and Michael, work for Dell Computer in Austin, TX.

Darcy Bevelacqua got together with her Hood roommate, Pamela Russell, in Austin, Texas to celebrate their birthdays. Pam is a food expert who has her own catering business so they dined at many fabulous places. Darcy also saw Virginia (Nia) Lourekas and her husband Mark in NYC. Nia is still writing and creating online computer instructional learning. Darcy and Nia went skydiving and gliding! Darcy works full-time as owner of her consulting firm, and her husband retired from practiing law. They spend their winters in Sarasota, Fl. and their summers in upstate NY on Keuka Lake.

Donna Eaton-Mahoney retired in 2009 after 37+ years with the Massachusetts Department of Social Services.She now works for a private adoption agency and for an addiction treatment center and can set her own schedule thereby allowing her to travel and pursue other interests.  Donna’s daughters, Erin and Lindsay, both live in the Boston area, and her grandsons, Wyatt (6) and Emmett(2) are the lights of her life.  Donna has reconnected with her former roommate Wendy Scott McDonald and with Roslyn Glantz Trojan whose husband lost his valiant battle against cancer in December 2012.

Donna Mikulak Strawser retired from teaching in 2008.  Her last position was supervisor of world language and ESL.  She and her husband now live in midcoast Maine where she works part time for a chiropractor and has an online job as well.  Donna has three grandsons in Maine and five more in Pennsylvania and Tennessee.She saw Cinthy White Gilbert and husband David twice this year after 42 years of not seeing each other!

Christy Monroe Smith’s youngest daughter, Rachel, graduated from the University of St. Andrews.  Christy, husband Tony, and daughter Liz traveled to Scotland for the ceremony and a family vacation.  Daughter Liz married her high school beau in May, and they are expecting their first child in February 2014.  Christy recently completed the Army Ten Miler foot race in Washington, DC.

Sue Montag Wood and husband Peter are retired and live in the city of Wollongong on the southeast coast of Australia.  They are just a short walk from town and the beach, and Sue swims most mornings at the salt-water pool adjacent to the ocean.  Their daughter, Megan is married with four sons and lives about 25 miles south while their son, David, just mover back to Wollongong.  Sue’s hobbies include patchwork, craft with wool and fabric, and reading and, like many retired people, Sue reports that there just isn’t enough time to do everything!  She is hoping for a visit from Nan Loader Calabretta and husband Tony in 2014.

Another school year has started and I, Mary McMunigal Burland, am still subbing at the school where I taught, making this my 42nd year of teaching.  Bill and I had a busy summer watching our granddaughter, going to our nephew’s wedding in Arizona, and spending several weeks in Kiawah, SC.  Now we are getting ready for a river cruise in France.  Mindy Laighton Wilcox has asked me to remind you that her new email address in mlwilcox3@gmail.com.  There are still lots of classmates we would love to hear from, so please let us know what you are doing so we can share your news in our next column!
