Greetings to the Class of 1987! Apologies that it has been a while since our last column. Work and two teenagers are a bit of a challenge! At this point I hope everyone has received information for our upcoming30th reunion in June. I know everyone always says this, but it is ridiculous to think it has been 30 years. Seriously? I only received a few updates, so I’m open to ideas for the best way to collect news. In addition, if anyone else would like to take on the job as class reporter for the next 30 years, I’m open to that as well and please send me an email and let me know if you are interested. Molly Reeder Chamberlain wrote that her family recently relocated from Washington, DC, to Newport, RI. Her husband, Doug, recently accepted a position as a professor at the Naval War College in Jamestown, RI. Her family, including her twin boys, age 9, are happy to be in New England and look forward to skiing this winter. Pamela Barres Fusco gave updates on her awesome kids: “My oldest son, Rob, 24, will be getting married next July in Newport, RI. He is quite a catch! He graduated from UCA San Diego with a chemical engineering degree three years ago. He is now pursuing a master’s in chemical engineering at UMass. Her daughter, Molly, 22, worked on the Marco Rubio campaign last year. She is now a project manager in Manchester, NH. She graduated from American University in DC in only three years! My youngest daughter, Emily, 21, is completing her senior year at UNH. She traveled to London last year and successfully completed a semester. She came home in May. She returned in July and was enrolled in an English literature course at Cambridge. She plans on studying at Cambridge for her master’s degree. My youngest child, Sam, is now in fifth grade and loves to help other kids in his class if they have problems, especially math problems.” On Nov. 3, Pamela had a total hip replacement. It was great to hear from Kathleen King Kinsey who provided her first update ever! She married her college sweetheart, had three daughters and moved all over the US and lived in Europe twice, played on a CA lacrosse team, raced triathlons and bike raced in Sicily, Italy. They settled in the Sacramento region after returning from Europe in 2011. Along the way she worked sales and business, left her career to raise three girls (3.5 years span for all of them) and stayed involved in community events in the places they lived. The marriage dissolved after almost 30 years, and the girls, now 15, 16 and 18, all live with her full time. Her oldest, Greta, is in the middle of a gap year between high school and college and is working with AmeriCorps City Year to mentor and tutor middle school students in a high-need school in Sacramento. Her middle daughter, Hallie is a junior in high school. She attended US Swimming’s Olympic Team Trials meet in Omaha in June 2016 for four races and is looking at colleges and universities all over the country. Her youngest, Annika, is also a swimmer and recently started playing lacrosse. Kathleen turned her passion for sports into a nonprofit youth swim team called the Folsom Wahoos Swim Team and she still swims, cycles and exercises daily. Hope this finds everyone enjoying summer! It was great to hear from a bunch of classmates especially those who were willing to share how they spent their BIG 5-0. In true Hood fashion, there was a lot of celebrating!! Beth Hawkins Perry, Scarlett Kinley, Lori Haugen Maze, Cathy Gillespie Hopper, Mary Beth Hession Blow ’88 and Jaime Boyce Lacey ’90 had a “mini-reunion” in Baltimore in March. It was decided that as they passed and approached the big 5-0, they were all looking remarkably similar to their Hood Days! Lucy Noepel was unable to make the trip from snowy New Hampshire since she was moving to a new home. Lucy celebrated her 50th with friends and also mentioned a trip to visit Scarlett in February. In April, she took a trip with her mom to Hood and they visited with Lori Haugen Maze. Maria Viola-Cable celebrated in April with a trip to Paris with her husband! One of the highlights of her trip was having champagne and dinner with fellow Hoodlum, Kay Nicholas Guillot. They hadn’t seen each other in 26 years, but it was as if no time had passed–Hood friendships last a lifetime! She added that the weather in Paris was fabulous and the trip was magical. 50 is off to a great start! Lynn Herzog Parker hit a few milestones this year so far–not only celebrating her 5-0 but also 26 years of marriage with her husband Bob. Her son Grant also just finished his first year of college at UVA. Robin Samuelman Kalfaian’s daughter Kate (age 21), graduated from Champlain College in Burlington, Vt., this spring. She is moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., to be a 3rd grade teacher. Her younger daughter Annie (age 19) just completed her sophomore year at James Madison Univ., in Virginia where she is studying speech and language pathology and communication disorders. They are spending time at home before heading off to Europe. Robin noted that she gets together with Lisa Edwards, Audrey MacDonald Wilcox ’86, Gretchen Miller-Anderson ’86, Lisa O’Brien ’86 and Deb Daly McClelland ’86 as much as they can! It was great to hear from Cindy Bull Zeller, P’17. She has a daughter Emily Zeller ’17 who is a rising junior at Hood pursuing a degree in English secondary education. Her daughter Julianne was born two days after the last reunion that I attended and will be a freshman at Towson Univ., in the fall. Her husband John is a retired Maryland State Trooper currently working as an investigator for the Maryland Lottery. Cindy has had a long and winding career in biomedical and forensic science leading to her favorite career so far, an associate professor at Towson Univ., where she’s taught Forensic DNA Analysis to both undergraduate and graduate students for the last 10 years. She was honored to receive the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Award for Teaching in 2013, an honor for which she can thank her professors at Hood who inspired her and became her role models whether they realized it or not. Happy 50th to everyone reaching that milestone this year…I think we all can agree that 50 really is the new 40! Thanks to everyone who sent an email with an update!  And, remember, you can send news anytime and I’ll update the blog. Greetings Class of 1987! Thanks to everyone who sent news. It is so great to hear from everyone! Doug White, M.S. ’94, has been busy at work and celebrated 25 years working at National Institute of Standards and Technology. The project he runs was recently honored with a National Digital Stewardship Alliance Innovation Award. Check it out at http://www.nist.gov/forensics/nsrl-award.cfm. Many classmates had kids graduating this past spring. Lisa Thomas Pfuhl’s  son Christian graduated from Queens Univ. of Charlotte in May. Her daughter Jacklyn will be a sophomore there this fall and plays on the tennis team. Lisa and her husband Fred are checking off a bucket list item and moving to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Pamela Barres Fusco returned from San Diego where her son Robby graduated from the Univ. of California, San Diego with a degree in chemical engineering. He will head back to New Hampshire to live. She had all of her children in one place for the first time in many years! Her daughter, Stephanie, 24, is in Indiana and works in the banking field; her daughter Molly, 20, attends American Univ. in Washington, D.C., and is a political science major. Her daughter Emily, 19, attends the Univ. of New Hampshire and is an economics major. Her son Sam, 8, is going into third grade in the fall. Annie Wakimoto Patterson’s daughter Ali Sue graduated from the Univ. of Virginia in May with two bachelor’s degrees, biology and environmental science. In June her son Nate graduated from T.C. Williams high school in Virginia (Remember the Titans!) with an advanced diploma. Ali Sue spent two weeks in Europe and both kids went on a church mission trip to Harlan, Ky., where they will help refurbish homes with Appalachia Service Project. Annie started a new job with the Medical Identity Fraud Alliance and works from her home in Alexandria, Va. Lynn Herzog Parker celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary with husband Bob! Their son Grant will attend the Univ. of Virginia in the fall. So excited to hear from first-time news provider Julie Ann Christman, now Julie A. Cook! She is currently a financial and legal administrator for Guardian Properties, LLC. Her job responsibilities include appearing at District Court proceedings and keeping updated on landlord tenant laws and overseeing clients’ financial accounting. She uses all of her Hood education, especially political negotiation skills, with all of the various personalities she encounters. Julie lives in Rohrersville, Md., with her husband Gordon and spends her time training and showing Arabian horses! They recently championed in western horsemanship and western trial at the Region 15 show in Lexington, Ky. Jill Kramer Hermes celebrated her one-year anniversary as the career center and office of service learning director at Hood College. She loves working with Hood students in all academic disciplines and guiding them in career development. She lives in Ijamsville, Md., with her husband, son and beloved golden retriever. Congratulations go to Stacy Lund Levy for competing in the Ironman Ceour d’Alene! While there she vacationed and visited Idaho, Montana and Washington with her family. On the home front in Baltimore, she is growing her art business at Lund Art Studios. She keeps in touch with Anna Leventis and encourages everyone to go to her restaurant, Sobo Cafe (http://sobocafe.net/). The food is outstanding! Teresa Rivera Bean is running for the office of State’s Attorney for Frederick County. In a recent interview, she credited Hood College for preparing her for the position. “I attended Hood as an all-women’s college and my education at Hood provided me with mentors, networking, leadership, sisterhood, knowledge, experience and confidence to run for this office,” said Teresa. She wrote that she recently ran into Dixie Miller ’72, M.A. ’77, P’76, on the day of the primary election and “she told me, ‘Dr. Lewis would be so proud of you.’ Thank you, Dr. Virginia Emerson Lewis for your inspiration. Lots of classmates had kids graduating this past spring.  Lisa Pfuhl‘s son, Christian, graduated from Queens University of Charlotte in May.  Her daughter, Jacklyn, will be a sophomore there this fall and plays on the tennis team. Jennifer Stoll DeGross wrote with an update for a few of our classmates.  It looks like Molly Reeder and her husband, Doug Chamberlain, moved back to the DC area and are living in Bethesda.  Their twin boys just turned 6 years old.  Jennifer and Molly just joined a few other alum at a birthday lunch for Kit Berriman Snodgrass ’86 and Faye Phillips.  Faye and her husband James live on Capitol Hill with their two kids, Grace, 14 and Jim, 16.  Jennifer and husband, Trey, still live in Arlington with their son John-Pierce, 17.  They recently went to the Notre Dame vs. Navy football game during a trip to South Bend, Indiana.

Anna Leventis just celebrated the two year anniversary of her restaurant, SoBo Café, in the Federal Hill area of Baltimore.  She is loving the career change!  Laura Zaccardi recently made a surprise visit.

Andrew Brandler retired from his position as Program Manager for the Radiologic Technology program at St. John’s River State College in St. Augustine, Florida to start Select Coffee Service, a coffee service that provides gourmet coffee beverages to businesses.  He also teaches as an adjunct professor for the college so he stays very busy.  Please check out Andrew’s website at imageselectenjoy.com or selectcoffeeservicejax.com. His wife, Patricia ’98, is also involved with the business.

Carolyn Shaw and Nancy Neff Dunn with three other friends enjoyed a two week vacation in Rome and Sorrento during September.

Tara Cannava has a new job as a Director of Operations for Hall Health Center at the University of Washington.   This is UW’s student health center and provides care and education to UW students, faculty and staff.  She wrote that it’s a fun change to be in the middle of a big college campus, as most of her other work time has been spend in a hospital setting.  Her children Nick and Natalie are 10 and enjoying a busy fall with basketball and lots of homework!  She recently spent a long weekend with her Hood roommate, Susan Brunner Briddell ‘86 at her home on Whidbey Island.

On a personal note, I just finished working on season 2 of a TV series for BYUtv called “Granite Flats.”  It’s a one-hour family drama filmed here in Utah and can be found on most cable networks or online at byutv.org.  I’m looking forward to a little break between episodes to catch up on things around the house and return to some writing.

Condolences to the family and friends of Stephanie Carlson Murray ’88.  I will always remember Stephanie’s smiling face during our years at Hood.  Thoughts and prayers for Stephanie’s daughter, Courtney.

Happy holiday season to everyone! I apologize for what is a very short column. In the craziness that is life, I forgot about the deadline and to make things worse, I forgot the submission deadline. I think we need to move to an online blog format? Where everyone can just comment once a month? What do you think? Thanks to the classmates who did respond to my late email. To begin, condolences to Nancy Klingensmith Neff Dunn whose husband Jim lost a courageous battle to pancreatic cancer on Oct. 6. Our hearts are with Nancy and her family. Robin Samuelman Kalfaian wrote that she recently celebrated the wedding of her god-daughter Sarah Wilcox to Garrison Moore (Sarah is the daughter of Audrey MacDonald Wilcox ’86. Robin and her husband Jim traveled to Pittsburgh for the wedding along with Lisa O’Brien ’86, Lisa Edwards and Gretchen Miller-Anderson ’86. Robin still teaches kindergarten in Guilford, Conn. Her daughter Kate is a sophomore at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt., and her daughter Annie is currently a high school senior, anxiously awaiting college acceptance letters! Personally, I am not quite sure how Robin’s daughters can be that old.

Pam Barres Fusco is a first-time submitter! She wrote that she is on her second marriage to her husband Tony and they have a 7-year-old boy. She has spent the last 22 years raising four incredible children from her first marriage. Her youngest is 17 years old now and a senior in high school; she also has an 18-year-old who is a freshman at American Univ., in Washington, D.C.; a 20-year-old who is a junior at the Univ. of California, San Diego; and a 22-year-old living in Colorado. Since this is so short, I will add again this time that it was great seeing everyone at the reunion in June. I hope it is not too long until the next one! It was so fun to take a break and just be with the girls again! So, all the best to you and your families for the New Year!
