2015 has been a busy year for me, Amy Countryman Stavely. Between school, volunteering and the kid’s (Alexander is now 12-years-old and Ellie will be 3-years-old in July), I am rarely home. It all seems to be paying off though, because in April, I was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Awards by Anne Arundel County Council of PTAs. What’s even more exciting is seeing a long term project come to fruition. For the last year, I’ve been working with Odenton Elementary School to help raise money for a new playground and in May, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education approved the installation of our new playground. I’m excited to see it go in this summer and hope that come August, when school starts, the students will be just as excited to play on it! For now, it’s Rugby season so I’ll be sweating away in the hot sun, but it’s worth it to see my oldest play. I hope your 2015 has treated you well and I look forward to hearing your news soon! Melanie Jacobs Srivisal was married April 20, 2013 to Darin Srivisal outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. Her maid of honor was Laura Schultz. The wedding was attended by Jamie Hentz White, Sherie Love, Jen Martin McDermott, Erica Falk Grenada, Erin McNulty, Tricia Muir ’00 and Meg Kula ’01. They currently live in Montgomery Village, Md. Most importantly, on Feb. 2, 2014, they welcomed daughter Kaylee Gwendolyn into the world. They are so in love with her!

Nothing like the sun to get everyone in a good mood. If you are like me, I am always so thankful to have another winter behind us. I hope you have a wonderful summer. After almost 4 years, I can finally say I feel settled in Indiana. Bill and I downsized into a ranch in a new neighborhood and have made some wonderful friends. We have a corner lot and sit on our patio almost nightly and it seems to be the gathering place. We always have an open bottle of wine to share. My youngest daughter Kaylin is getting married this October so we are in full planning stages. With the three grandsons and baseball starting up again, our weekends will be spent on the ball field this summer. I am still working full time as a senior project manager for a label and packaging company. Linda Wilce Marmer, M.S.’90 is planning a busy summer. In May, Linda and her husband Mike go to the nation’s largest model train show in York, Pa., where they will also go cycling on the rail trail that runs from York to the Maryland line. They will be spending one week cycling on the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail near Ohiopyle, Pa., and one week cycling on the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Wellsboro, Pa. In October, they will spend another two weeks cycling and hiking in and near Acadia National Park in Maine. They go to the Washington Nationals baseball home games on Sundays and fill in with Frederick Keys and other minor league teams. Linda is still working at Sodexo HQ in Gaithersburg on the culinary systems offer development team. She wishes everyone a great summer! Mary Thompson Calhoun has updated us on her amazing husband Calhoun who turned 105 in January. He has been enrolled in Boston University’s New England Centenarian Study. He is one of only 5,000 people in this country age 105 or older. They will be conducting research using his DNA which will be shared and used for decades to come in various Alzheimer’s and other academic studies of age-related illnesses and conditions. Her husband may be a living Fountain of Youth! Leigh Moomaw McBride sent a note about her busy life as a grandma. Spending time in Connecticut with her daughter’s family and her granddaughter Grace and babysitting her son’s family and grandson Levi who will be a big brother come November. Her family keeps growing. She loves the freedom to visit with the kids and travel when she wants as well as play some golf, workout and read. Stephanie Constantino Chisolm just spent some time with Lisa Kondylas up in Baltimore where she was working on a home renovation. She is a “mom-lord” having bought a cute row house that her middle daughter Kate is renting. She became a mother-in-law last fall when Claire, her oldest got married, and welcomed her baby Caroline home from her studies at Oxford. She takes great pleasure in having such great young women in her life. Congratulations to Ken Kerr who has a new position at Frederick Community College as AVP for Academic Affairs/ Dean of Arts and Sciences. Becky Koose Levine shared some exciting news that her son Isaac will be getting married in Baltimore this August. She is looking forward to, at long last, having a daughter. Isaac is finishing up his pre-med requirements at Rutgers. Becky and her husband Yehuda bought their retirement home in Milwaukee and have been spending a lot of time there. The wedding and related festivities will be keeping them busy through the summer. Congratulations to Luther Jett who wrote to say his chapbook of poetry, Not Quite: Poems Written in Search of My Father will be published this summer by Finishing Line Press.

In a convocation address Ann Patchett said to an incoming freshman class, “After the opportunity to learn, the best thing about going to college is all the friends you’re going to make.  There are people in this room today you’ve never met who will become some of the most important people in your lives, and long after you’ve forgotten the papers you wrote or the grades you made, you will still have those friends.”  I heard this in the audio book, This is the Story of a Happy Marriage on my way to have lunch with one of my many college friends Sherry Bronski Waltz. I have been made aware of this truth over and over during the last four years of writing this column. The friends we made 40-plus years ago are very important and hopefully this column helps us keep up with the lives of those with whom we may have otherwise lost touch. Helen Metzger Zumsteg wrote that Ann Stevens Johnsen visited Helen and her husband Rick. Helen is retired from banking and Ann is semi-retired, still working part-time as a dietitian for a hospital. Helen has a new grandson and Ann’s three grandchildren have all graduated from high school. They love comparing notes on the joys of being grandmothers. Helen wrote “It’s hard to believe that it has been over 40 years since Ann and I met. What a great friendship we have!” The friend theme continues as Kathy Nixdorff Wilson wrote that she and Marcia Coyle DiBiagio, H’08 are able to get together for lunch. Sue Morrow Cawley wrote that the last time she sent in any information was back in the late 80’s when her daughter Erin was recovering from bone cancer. She is happy to report that Erin is now almost 37 and has two wonderful sons. Sue’s other daughter Megan is married and a behavioral therapist. Sue and husband Buc still live in Pittsburgh but also have a home in Cape May, N.J. Since Buc’s retirement two years ago, they’ve been dividing their time between both homes and taking many trips. Pam Callis Diers ’74 stayed with them in Cape May. They hadn’t seen each other since she was in their wedding almost 39 years ago! Sue said, “It was wonderful–we picked up right where we left off! We relived our Hood days, talked non-stop and laughed a lot! Some friendships are timeless!” Charlie Miller Ponticelli recently heard from Ellen Buck Schwark.  Ellen’s daughter Lucy has been teaching in Peru where she met a wonderful young man she will soon be marrying. Ellen’s step-daughter Beth is also planning to wed, so Ellen will soon be sewing two wedding dresses. Charlie is program director for the American Committees on Foreign Relations, adjunct professor at Catholic Univ., plus she does some pro bono work for Afghanistan as a member of the US-Afghan Women’s Council (USAWC).  She said that it is often quite a balancing act, but there have been some interesting moments. She went to Dallas in February for a USAWC meeting hosted by Laura Bush along with the new first lady of Afghanistan, Rula Ghani. In March, she attended the State Department’s dinner for Afghan Pres. Ghani and chief executive Abdullah. Ann Jones wrote that her dear 90-year-old father died at the end of September. He always flew in for Dad ’n Daughter weekend. He was a big part of her life since her mother died in 2010. Ann has been doing storytelling and in November made a solo appearance at a pub in Chicago telling a story. Amy Hanley Dove reported that her daughter has returned to New Zealand for a graduate program in primary teaching. She is away again after having just been there for two years. While Toni Lucia continues in her consulting work, she has also been busy with board assignments. In addition to her role on the board of advisors for Better Communications, Inc., she has recently joined the Advisory Board of NetSpeed Learning Solutions and the board of directors and executive team of the Instructional Systems Association. I, Sally Parkhurst Van Why, have just become a grandmother for the second time. My husband and I toured the southwest in our RV in the fall and had the joy of seeing Jill Schonek Pollard while we were in Florida this winter. Keep enjoying those Hood friendships, I know that I do.

News from Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia and Pennsylvania highlighted communications this spring! Jeannie McCarty Bowen and Ray are still in their same Gaithersburg home. Ray is still enjoying dental work. Jeannie is doing photos on the computer and learning to use the iPad.  They are enjoying senior center activities (lectures, museum trips; jeanbo1@verizon.net). Kaye Peterson Boothman is an obviously gifted oil painter, sending a lovely note card with her painting of “Hardwick Center.” Although dealing with health issues, she had time to write and send a newsy letter which is much appreciated. Dorris Smith Radcliffe, although retired from being class reporter relayed a great letter describing her diligence with caring for Rip’s recovery from foot surgery. Another two or three months from April should yield better maneuvering for him. She was attending two high school graduations and three college commencements. Eagle Scout Honor Court prevented their attending the 2014 Hood Reunion. The past year was occupied with keeping in touch with family, friends, homemaking, church and continuing adjustments to eldest son (55) Andy’s disability from non-malignant brain cancer surgery, and ballroom dancing and gardening.  It was great to see Betty Remsburg Decoligny when she visited here in Carlisle. She, too, is dealing with extended health issues with Warren. Betty attended the 2014 Reunion as did Tillie Jacks SunnygardJoan Wagner Tolbert lives nearby in Shippensburg. My grandchildren, ranging in age from 16 to 26 are in Hua Hin, Thailand; Seoul, South Korea; Mansfield College, Pa.; and, Hanover, Pa. I’m thankful for all of the blessings in life which continue to astound me.
