Kathrine Anderson writes that she lives in Manchester by the Sea (MA) and is a full-time mom to her three kids: Philip works as a firefighter, Antonia is a HS junior, and Emilia is a HS sophomore.  She recently attended an alum event where she met President Chapdelaine and reconnected with Nancy Gillece ‘81, Kellye Greenwald, Jacqueline Hollands, and Kim Sparling Clauson.

Judy Glaser Shaw and her husband Steve have moved to Las Vegas, but still plan to summer in Ocean City.

Joanna Kaldes Kontanis reports that she and husband Kosta are “finally done paying college bills”!  Their older daughter Alissa graduated from Drexel Lax and is working as a judicial law clerk in Lancaster, PA.  Their younger daughter Hanna graduated from Eastern University and works as an RN in the ER at Lancaster General Hospital – they are happy to have their girls close by. While her husband is running his manufacturing company, Joanna says she always manages to always find things to keep her busy.

I saw Janet Kemman Kirby ’87 at Dr Martha Church’s celebration of life and she shared that her daughter graduated from BHS and will start classes at FCC this spring.  Her son is a HS junior and starts driving soon!

I’ve had the opportunity to visit with many alums over the past few months.  Teresa Rivera Bean ’87 was the volunteer coach for the Hood MLAX alum game vs the current team – I was lucky enough to be able to shoot the event and loved seeing my son, Drew Althouse ’12, playing again.  My husband, Mike, and I crashed the USNA84 reunion in Annapolis so we could see Betsy Reed Ringel and husband Jeff, Jennifer Lee Matts’ husband Bob, as well as Lynne Davis Anderson and her husband Dave.  We had plans to host a visit with Marcia Groobert Ortiz, Janet Drogin Wilson (and her HoodLum daughter Riley), and Teresa Rivera Bean (and her HoodLum daughter Lily), but plans fell through though another visit is planned for January. Three classmates met up recently in Nashville with their husbands and teased us with their pictures of bowling, drinks, and line dancing… but I haven’t been given permission to share details here.  Another classmate’s daughter is a senior at West Point and plays on their WLAX team – we wish her daughter all our best as she finishes her education and begins her journey toward flying helicopters in the Medical Service Corps.

On a personal note, my husband has taken a new job as the Chief Compliance Officer for The Bancorp in Wilmington, DE. Our two sons are “grown and flown”.  Drew and his wife Kristen live in Michigan where he is an athletic trainer for Madonna University.  Evan lives in DC where he works for The MITRE Corporation – he will finish a Masters in Analytics from Georgia Tech and will receive his degree in December.  I’m still shooting Navy football, lacrosse, and the occasional basketball game for The Mid Report (a Rivals.com website) and work as a Brand Ambassador for Boordy Vineyards, offering tastings in MD, DE, and PA.  Follow me on Instagram (@Alison86) or Twitter (@alisportshots).  Would love to meet up with any HoodLums traveling near Philadelphia/Wilmington DE – reach out any time!

HUGE NEWS: Kellye Greenwald is now our Hood College Director of Alumni and Constituent Engagement!  Her kids are happy and healthy: daughter Zoe is living with her partner in Tumwater WA. and is the Director of Youth Services for a home for displaced/foster teens while son Ed is living in Gainesville with plans for nursing school next fall. Her email is greenwald@hood.edu – have Hood ring will travel!  If you’d like to host an Alumni gathering or event in your area, please email Kellye!

Joanna Kaldes-Kontanis’ older daughter Alissa graduated from Drexel law school studying for the bar exam. Her younger daughter Hanna will be working at Lancaster General Hospital after graduation this spring. She and her husband Kosta celebrated their 30th anniversary this year.

Patty Kenyon Grimm and Chris celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary in June and are enjoying the downsized empty-nester life in Batesville, VA. Patty is a Patient Relations Representative at the UVA Medical Center and Chris is semi-retired from State Farm. Their son Beck and daughter-in-law Ellie recently moved to Colorado Springs, CO. Patty continues her work as a victim impact speaker for MADD. To read her story visit: https://www.traumasurvivorsnetwork.org/pages/patty-s-story.

Betsy Reed Ringel had a busy year! She and husband Jeff traveled to Dallas, Laguna Beach & VA Beach as well as Amsterdam & Brussels to meet up with daughter Elise who was studying in Sweden. In October, their son Chad got married in Baltimore with Jennifer Lee Matts and Jane Brophy Martinez in attendance.

Susan Waltz Hietpas started Simply Amazing, a non-profit foundation, inspired by the love and loss of her daughter Emily. Simply Amazing provides art and craft supply boxes to children living in homeless shelters or participating in at-risk youth programs. Visit SimplyAmazing.org to learn more.

Robyn Whittemore lives Avon, CT with her three children. Robyn’s daughter Kori is 16 and is a National Team hockey player; she has twin boys, Garrett and Kyle (13) who play soccer, hockey and baseball.  Robyn continues her career in Contracts in the Aerospace & Defense industry and in her spare time she has started a small manufacturing company called “Whitt’s Whey” – you can order Robyn’s unique and delicious “Proteinola” through her company’s Facebook page.

As for me (Alison Drum Althouse), my husband Michael (USNA86) took a new job with Barclays Bank in Wilmington DE and we now live in Avondale PA, a mile over the Delaware line.  Our older son, Drew Althouse ’12, got married this summer and is an Athletic Trainer for Madonna University, located in Novi, MI. Fun fact: my husband was the officiant for our son’s wedding in Mentor, OH.  Our younger son, Evan, is a Data Scientist with MITRE (doing “math stuff”) and is finishing his Masters from Georgia Tech. I continue to shoot Navy Football and Lacrosse (and sometimes Basketball) for @TheMidReport and love being able to get so close to all the action.  I spent a wonderful beach weekend in August at the home of Stacey Robins Baum with Sarah Bowersox Cody ‘87, Jane Brophy Martinez, Chris Hom Wilson, Jennifer Lee Matts, Betsy Reed Ringel, Alex van Gigch Mores, and Maria Viola Cable ’87Marcia Groobert Ortiz visited for a weekend in October and she’ll be here in January for a visit with Janet Drogin Wilson and Teresa Rivera Bean ‘87.  Just before Christmas, I was lucky enough to have a Hood85 dinner with Chris Santrizos Chagaris ‘85 and Meredith McQuoid-Greason ‘85 at the home of Susan Audino, but I missed out on their group’s visit to Longwood Gardens the next dayThere’s really nothing like a HoodLum reunion of any sort.  I always have an available bedroom (we “upsized” with this home) if any friends/classmates want to visit… just let me know!

Margaret Bushwaller Powers just completed her Digital Marketing certificate at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.  She’s looking forward to putting her schooling into practice at work soon. A get together with Eleanor Chisholm Landauer, Ann Barry Mitchell, and Jacquie Hollands Ignacio is in the works for later this summer.

Chrysti Hogan and her wife, Jeanne, took a 5-day tour of New England in June and enjoyed seeing Boston, Cape Cod, Newport RI, and Bar Harbor Maine. They also spent time with Chrysti’s mom Edee Howard Hogan (Hood ‘59) at her beach house in Delaware.

Becky May and Kim Sparling Clausen ‘87 are traveling to South Africa in July with their NH singing group.

Christie Nicodemus Bailey shared that her middle daughter Samantha just graduated from Hood!  Samantha’s major is Integrated Marketing and Communications with a minor in French. This spring she also set and then reset her record twice in the Hammer Throw for the women’s track and field team. It was a great final semester for her!

Mari Padilla Spina wrote that her daughter, Alexa, is home from her semester abroad and is adapting back to life in America. Hard to believe she will be a senior at Providence College this year. Mari’s time lately is spent visiting colleges for rising senior, Nicholas.  Mari is very sad to report that a very dear friend of her HoodLum group, Dana Collins, passed away unexpectedly. They met Dana and remained friends even after we all left Hood.

Gemmi Teleki-Revay is still living in Vienna Austria with her son, Árpád, who will not only be turning 13 this summer but also is on the Austrian Jr Champion baseball team! Anyone coming over should reach out because she’d love to see everyone and is more than happy to offer sightseeing advice.

I am excited to announce the wedding of my son, Drew Althouse ’12 to Kristen Baker on July 6, 2018.  His brother, Evan, was his Best Man, his Hood classmates, Mike Lancaster ’12 and Jared Webb ’13, were groomsmen and my husband, Michael (USNA86) was the officiant.  Michael is now working with Barclays (BarclayCard Compliance Advisory Director) and we live in Avondale, PA.  Let me know if you’re traveling near Wilmington, DE or Philadelphia, PA… my cell phone and email haven’t changed in years!

  5. 1986: Summer 2016 (30th Reunion recap)

    by
    Comment

June 10-12, 2016 was our 30th reunion, and we had a great time together.  Whether it was spent on campus, attending a seminar, wine tasting, or simply drinking on the porch of Meyran, this weekend helped remind me of all that is so amazing about our class.  Since it’s still fresh in my mind, this column will be a story about the fun we had… and what you missed if you weren’t able to join us!

Friday started with a seminar on Domestic Violence, led by Teresa Rivera Bean ‘87 in the new Moot Courtroom in Tatem.  Joining many other HoodLums to hear her update and informative discussion was wonderful and I highly encourage everyone to get involved in this plight if you can.  Teresa and I then went downtown to La Paz to do a bit of pre-gaming before dinner (Sangria anyone?).  Our Rogue Off-Campus Dinner at La Paz was a special request by Kristy Wiarda Williams and her husband Jim, so we made the most of it.  While others were dining on crabs at the Maryland-style dinner, we had Mexican food and lots of fun catching up.  Joining us that night were (in “around the table” order) Lynne Davis Anderson, Sue Auger Manory, Trish Bizink Abell ‘87, Siobhan Connellan ‘91, Janet Drogin Wilson, Marcia Groobert Ortiz, Kristy Wiarda Williams, Kristy’s husband Jim Williams, and Teresa Rivera Bean ‘87.  Ingrid Chris Hause, LIsa Marie O’Brien, and Parry Kenyon Grimm were originally planning to join us, but plans had to be adjusted.  We broke up after dinner to go a few separate ways.  Teresa took Kristy, Jim, and Marcia onto campus while Sue, Lynne, and I walked down the canal to meet Martha Hearn Shimano and Donna Becker at The Wine Kitchen for an after-dinner drink before calling an Uber to take us back to campus.  My weekend roommate, Lisa Marie O’Brien, finally arrived from Long Island and we settled in for the night just after midnight.

Saturday was jam-packed with activities and fun!  On campus, there were offerings of tours, a State-of-the-College meeting with our new President, and a lovely luncheon set in the Ron Volpe Athletic Center (I’ve seen photo proof that Angela Corio was  in attendance, but I missed seeing her in person).  We chose to take a different route to start our day.  After a quick run to Starbucks, Lisa and I headed to a Rogue Off-Campus Lunch at The Main Cup in Middletown (Owned by Kimberly Longenecker-Brenengan ‘87) to meet early with Tracy Tischer. Joining us for this terrific lunch were (again, in “around the table” order) Patty Kenyon Grimm, Lisa O’Brien, Kim Longenecker ‘87, Janice Peacock Spiegel ‘85, Howard Spiegel, Donna Becker, Marcia Groobert Ortiz, Kristy Wiarda Williams, and Kristy’s husband Jim.  Pam Brown was originally planning to come, but something came up and she sadly had to cancel.  We made it back on campus in time to catch the bus to the winery tour of New Market Plains Winery where we met up with our class group (Eleanor Chisholm Landauer, Lisa O’Brien, Sue Auger Manory, Patty Kenyon Grimm, Lynne Davis Anderson, and Anna Maripuu).  While there, we met a stellar group of HoodLums from 2011 who became our new “little sisters” and we looked for “our Elevens” (FB names of Samantha Haines, Katelynne Marie, Meghan Amber and Rachel Utsch ‘11) wherever we went.

Saturday night was the big class dinner and we were all in rare form.  When we finally stood for a group photo (but not an official one you’d find on any website), we had a great number of classmates.  From L-R in attendance were: Donna Becker, Kristy Wiarda Williams, Sue Auger Manory, Lynne Davis Anderson, Eleanor Chisholm Landauer, Patty Kenyon Grimm, Anna Maripuu, Karen Dotterer Wilson, Susan Anne Batroukha Mondelo, Elvy Viera, Nadya Aswad, Mike Birmingham, Mari Padilla Spina, Nanette Rosario, Gina Oliveros, Khateeta Emerson, Lucy Ment, Ana Besu, Lisa Marie O’Brien, Maritza Bido, Martha Hearn Shimano, and Caroline Kish Lewis.  The food was great and the company was even better!  After we closed down the Athletic Center, a small group of us took a few beverages over to the front porch of Meyran to continue the evening.  We met up with our “Elevens” and took turns singing songs and sharing stories until late into the night before we all went back to Shriner to crash.

Sunday was, of course, the Strawberry Breakfast.  Excellent food with even better company was the best way to wrap up the weekend.  Posing for photos with Howard Spiegel, Eleanor Chisholm Landauer, Lisa Marie O’Brien, Sue Auger Manory, Anna Maripuu, Lynne Davis Anderson, and Karen Dotterer Wilson surrounding our “Elevens” was a highlight, as were the photos with Elvy Viera, Anna Besu, Nadya Awsad, and Susan Anne Batroukha Mondelo.  As I headed out of town, I got to finally visit with Kim Burns ‘87, Gina Oliveros, Lucy Ment, Maritza Bido, and Mari Padilla Spina before driving Lisa O’Brien through downtown so she could see all the changes before she began her long drive back to Long Island.

For those of you who weren’t able to come to this reunion, please know that you were missed and remembered.  We’re keeping the Hood86 Class Page open on Facebook, so feel free to join us there any time!   Let’s see if we can have an even bigger group at our 35th reunion!  I’ll get back to posting individual news in the next edition, but hopefully this allowed you to see how much fun can be had when you travel back to Hood for a reunion.  Love to you ALL!

Late note: I’ll add photos to this posting as soon as I download them to my laptop.  🙂

    Hood 1986 Update:

Since I only got two updates from classmates, I decided to simply allow their words to fill everyone in on their activities.
Chrysti Hogan and her wife, Jeanne, took a TransCanada rail trip from Vancouver to Toronto this past summer and enjoyed traveling through the Canadian Rockies, seeing the wide open plains and getting to take a helicopter ride over Niagra Falls!  This month, they are renovating the master bathroom in their house, and are beginning to make plans for next summer’s trip.  They may try to work a stop in Frederick for the reunion into the itinerary!
Mari Padilla Spina shared that this year has been one of adjustment for her as she sent her first born Alexa off to Providence College. How the time flies. Her son Nicholas is 14 and a freshmen in high school. He is her athlete so keeps them busy while Alexa is away. She is still working in the insurance Industry doing medical malpractice from home which is a very nice fit for her. This year her annual gathering was hosted by Gina Oliveros ’86 in her beautiful home in Ft Lauderdale! Gina’s son is a sophomore in college and her daughter is a senior in HS. Gina continues to travel with her husband internationally any chance she gets.  In attendance were Maritza Bido ’86, Lucy DeBrosse Ment ’86, Nanette Rosario Sanchez ’86,  Khateeta Emerson, Kim Burns ’87,  Maribel Martinez ’87, and Mari. they spent a very relaxing day being pampered all day at a day spa followed by many fun dinners and an incredible brunch prepared by Gina and Maritza. They all look so forward to this gathering and it is amazing how after 30 years they manage to pick up right where they left off and walk away from the weekend feeling completely rejuvenated! Can’t wait for the 30th reunion as we all head to Frederick to celebrate where this lifetime friendship began. Everyone is looking forward to seeing as many of our classmates as possible!
As for me, I am learning how to be an empty-nest mom.  I still work in the wine industry (Boordy Vineyards and Opici Family Distributors) and pen two blogs (www.fromthebottomofawinebottle.wordpress.com and www.beatitudesofmylife.wordpress.com).  Both my boys are employed and  dating wonderful women, so our lives are coming around full circle.  I’m very much looking forward to our 30th reunion and will set up a reunion FB page as soon as possible so we can start reaching out to classmates and friends!  I’ll post the address on my FB page as soon as I can get things set up. JUNE 10-12, 2016… Book it in your calendar and join us!!

Hello, my 1986 HoodLums.  I have very little news to share this month, but I would be remiss if I didn’t start with the most difficult. It is with a very heavy heart that I convey news of the death of Leslie Shapiro Fippinger’s son, Scott Fippinger, while he was on a Mid-January break in Mexico. Leslie, her husband Eric, and their daughter Rachel are still mourning the sudden loss of Scott and appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers on their behalf. Elizabeth Shimer Murphy’s mom, Judith Washko Shimer ’63, P’86 died in her Pennsylvania home on February 26, 2014 after a 7-year battle with ovarian cancer. Elizabeth and her family appreciate the thoughts and prayers they have received over the past year and hope that all women listen to their bodies and be pro-active in their own healthcare. Christie Nicodemus Bailey, P’16, P’18 wrote to say that her daughter Samantha Bailey ’18 just started her freshman year at Hood, so she is part of the class of 2018! She is a thrower on Hood’s track and field teams and having a great first indoor season. Congrats to you all, Christie! Stacey Robins Baum shared that she and Frank sold their business and after 37 years of employment, she’s now retired! Can’t wait to hear all about your retirement, Stacey, although it’s also fun to see photos of all the HoodLums you find along your travels! As for me, Alison Drum Althouse, P’12 my husband and I have moved to Harford County, Md., as Michael now works for PayPal in Timonium, Md. Older son Drew Althouse ’12 is finishing his master’s degree in athletic training at Shenandoah Univ. and younger son Evan has been working for a research firm in NOVA since his graduation from UVA in May 2014… the empty nest life is getting more and more comfortable! If anyone wants to share news of kids, family, job changes/searches or general updates, please know you can reach me anytime. My home address is now 292 Kitty Court, Forest Hill MD 21050.  My email (especially for Hood news) is alison.althouse@gmail.com and my cell is 804-814-0470. If you’re coming to the Northern Baltimore area, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Just an additional update, for those of you who actually read this message online:  I will always do whatever I can to get you in touch with classmates and friends from our HoodLum years.  I’ve had a few people who have reached out to me because of this article and would be so glad to connect more of you to one another!  I’ve included my email and cell phone for a reason… as your class reporter, I believe it’s important for us to continue to keep in touch with one another, support one another, and befriend one another.  I’m here… just let me know how I can help!

    Now for the Hood86 news!
Susan Batroukha Mondelo recently reconnected with Andrea Palmer Kibbe Hood’87. Her two boys (20 and 18 years old) are together at the University of Arizona in Tucson on full academic scholarships in the Honors Program. Her daughter just started middle school and is feeling quite grown up (at age 11) about it! Susan is working with the Department of Health and Human Services in Montgomery County in the Long Term Care Ombudsman program as an advocate for residents of long term care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities and small group homes. She is also in touch with and occasionally gets to see Ana Besu!
Mike Birmingham reminded me that he can no longer live vicariously through Madeline ’14 who graduated May 17 with a B.A. in Elementary/Special Education. She was recently hired by FCPS and will be teaching second grade at Whittier Elementary this Fall. Madeline received honors in the Spring semester for the second consecutive year respectively, from Kappa Delta Pi education honor society and Chi Alpha Sigma national college athletic society.
Josie Espino Calix wrote to share that Petra Liz Morel was celebrating her birthday on July 12th. Lucy DeBrosse Ment, Maritza Bido and Josie Espino Calix were in attendance. Petra has two wonderful granddaughters, and she is an assistant superintendent. Lucy has a beautiful 2 yr old foster son, who is keeping her young and busy. She continues to work as a Spanish teacher in Brooklyn, NY. Maritza also continues to help children in the school system as well. She is the mother of two college students. Daniel just finished his freshman year and Saul will be a freshman this fall. Josie is also a Spanish teacher and soon will be the grandmother of another boy.
Mary Gillette Delgado writes that she is living in Chesapeake Virginia with husband Tony, stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. They are almost empty nesters. Nick, 23, graduated from University of South Carolina this past May and is employed . Benjamin, 21, is at University of South Carolina, also studying international business. Only the 16 year old, Andrew, is left at home. She is a certified soccer mom between travel soccer (all over the state of Virginia) and high school soccer. Mary has been doing triathlons for the past 3 years because biking and swimming are ok substitutes if you can’t run. She is also busy in her church with leading bible studies and community services. She keeps in touch with Jan Hess Howell, tho it’s never quite enough. Every time she passes by a wisteria bush/ vine, she thinks of the Pergola and bumble bees.

Kellye Greenwald is working at the Walt Disney World Resort, recently promoted to Research Coordinator, and still making my cookies when she can. In her spare time, she loves driving down to Sanibel Island for midnight shell hunts to feed her craft habit.
Sheila Guth Snyder proudly shared that her daughter Alyssa graduated as a third-generation x-ray tech in May of 2013. Her other two daughters, Stephanie and Andrea, are in college right now.
Suzanne Hankel Kilduff’s son Cameron graduated from high school this year and her daughter Sarah completed her 2nd year of college. Suzanne is working on her Masters of Science from Eastern Nazarene College and plans to become a therapist for the second half of her life.

Susan Hastings will be in Namibia the second half of August to attend a family wedding. This will be her fifth trip to that country in the last 20 years. For her 50th b-day, friends took her to a B&B up near Hershey PA and the room she was in had an African décor which was part of their surprise for her.

Chrysti Hogan and her wife, Jeanne, traveled to Alaska in early June, cruising through the inside passage and seeing whales, eagles and a moose! This “bucket list” trip was a celebration of their 20 years together as well as Chrysti’s 50th birthday, and they enjoyed it immensely.
Christina Hom Wilson married Harold Dawson Jr in December, merging their two families in a lovely ceremony at home. She was able to attend a birthday celebration at the beach home of Stacey Robins Baum in April.
Lisa O’Brien recently moved into a new home in a gated community and says she needs to learn to play golf, since she lives on the 3rd hole. Her youngest, Michael, just completed his junior year at SUNY Cortland and is home for the summer. Her oldest, Bryan, is still playing the drums in his Soundgarden Tribute Band, and working full time. Her daughter, Elisabeth, is working on her graduate degree at Carlow University in Pittsburgh. She’s also working as a server at an upscale Italian restaurant and just started a nanny job during the day. Lisa will visit her in August when she attends the wedding of Audrey Wilcox’s daughter. Lisa is also traveling for much of the summer, heading to Mexico, San Diego, and Disney World! She is still working in the same school – 28 years now and still loves it.
Stacey Robins Baum chimed in to let us know that the Baum boys are headed west…Matthew graduated High School and is off to University of Michigan. Go Blue! Jared graduated with distinction from UVA Engineering, (dual major in Computer Science and Economics) and is now working at Epic Systems, Madison, WI, as a Developer, secretly wondering why they pay him to do a job he would do for free. Frank & Stacey have been too busy relocating their children, traveling and entertaining to realize that their nest has emptied. Stacey graciously hosted a fabulous 50th birthday celebration weekend in April – in attendance were Sarah Bowersox Cody (Hood’87), Jane Brophy Martinez, Alison Drum Althouse, Christina Hom Wilson, Jennifer Lee Matts, and Betsy Reed Ringel. It was a wonderful reunion of forever-friends… and aren’t we all that, as HoodLums?
Jane Ruf Haley lives in Plymouth, MA and owns a high end women’s consignment shop right in the downtown shopping district. The shop is called Tallulah’s Unique Boutique. She also lives downtown in the heart of it with her three beautiful children.
Cameron Soulis was ordained to the priesthood on a beautiful day in June at the Washington National Cathedral. Cindy Bull Zeller ’87, P’17 was there with her family. It was so wonderful to have both family and friends there to celebrate with her. In August, she will begin work as the lower school chaplain (grades 4, 5, 6) at National Cathedral School in Washington, DC, where she’ll teach religion, plan and lead the weekly chapel services, and do pastoral care for everyone in the lower school. As if Cameron’s life was not exciting enough, she got married on May 17th (to a man she met when a freshman at Hood), and graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary on May 22nd with her Masters in Divinity. What a year of milestones!
Elvy Vieira’s news is that her youngest child, Danielle, completed her Associates and will be transferring to university this Fall.
Susan Walts married Mark Hietpas on February 8, 2014 in their home. Congratulations to you both!

Michael and I recently relocated to Forest Hill, MD when he took a new job with PayPal, located in Timonium. I’m still writing both blogs and now work at Boordy Vineyards as a wine pourer. Older son, Drew (Hood’12), is working on his Masters in Athletic Training and will be assigned to the USNA Football training staff this fall, so we’ll see him often throughout the season.  Younger son, Evan, graduated from UVA with a degree in Math and is now working at AgileX in Arlington, DC as a software analyst.  We are currently unpacking our new home but will eventually have lots of space for visitors to the Baltimore area. Would love to share more with anyone – email me or find me on Facebook any time!

Katrina Anderson moved back to Manchester by the Sea, MA almost three years ago from Minneapolis, MN and works at Salem State University in the School of Social Work. She also volunteers as the elementary school PTO Treasurer and serves on two town committees.  Her kids are now 13, 11 and 9 and doing great.  Over the summer they visited Anne Lamoureux and her family in the DC area and had a great time!

Chrysti Hogan and her wife, Jeanne, are hoping to take an Alaskan cruise next summer to celebrate Chrysti’s 50th birthday and their 20th anniversary.  Dagmar Kolarik wrote that her business is doing really well.  Since she started her home furnishing workroom ten years ago, all her clients are recommended by other clients with whom she had previously worked.  However, in 2014, she plans to display her work in downtown Frederick and expand the business, Dagmar’s Décor. As Dagmar says, “Family is fine: four parents, one husband, two children, one son-in-law and two grandchildren.”  Kathryn Neel lives in New Smyrna Beach, FL these days and works as a freelance computer consultant.  When she’s not working on computer stuff, she paddleboards and volunteers at Canaveral National Seashore.

Laura Nipps Gardner still lives in New Hampshire and loves that they’ve been there 19.5 years! She works for the Merrimack School District as a Paraeducator and is very happy. Daughter Mollie just started high school (she plays soccer) and daughter Alexa is in 7th grade (she plays basketball).  Both are taller than Laura – taking after Greg! They took a fabulous family trip to Europe this past summer and Laura is still sorting through her photos. Mari Padilla Spina sends in her update: “Life has been crazy here with work and the kids. It’s hard to believe that we are starting college visits for Alexa, a junior in high school. Nicholas keeps us busy with his basketball.  I recently had lunch with Mari Martinez ’87 – there is nothing better than Hood sisters! Gina Oliveros and I are already planning our 50th birthdays!

Mercedes Pellet and her husband sold their business – M2 Limited – in 2006 and retired to Garrett County, Maryland. They joined HART for Animals, Inc., an animal-welfare organization that rescues animals from shelters and transports them to places to be adopted. Together, they raised funds to build an animal adoption center that would give more animals a chance. HART is opening that Animal Center in January 2014. HART has saved 6,000 cats and dogs, and has spayed/neutered 4,500 animals at its low-cost clinic in McHenry, Maryland.

Betsy Reed Ringel met up with Jennifer Lee Matts and Cindy Leitz Hurley ‘87 in Morristown for lunch recently. The Matts & Ringel families shared a vacation in 2012 to see the Navy-Notre Dame football game in Dublin (and sightseeing in Killarney). This year, Chad graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and is a chemical engineer with an adhesives company.  Elise is a freshman at Loyola in Baltimore and Caroline is a sophomore in high school. Jeff and I are getting used to a bit more free time and just celebrated our 27th anniversary.

Cameron Soulis sends some of the best news: “Well, this is certainly a big year for me!  I’m in my last year of seminary, I am to be ordained (God willing), I’m getting married, and I hope to start a new job next summer after graduation.  And it’s all happening between my 49th and 50th birthdays!  Nothing like starting my 5th decade of life with a bang.  Please know that I’d greatly appreciate your prayers and good thoughts (if you’re not the prayin’ sort) for my ordination.”

On a personal note, Christina Hom Wilson, Stacey Robins Baum, and I visited with Stephanie Carlson Murray ‘88 (Stacey’s little sis from Hood) in September, shortly before Stephanie’s death from cancer in October 2013.  It was a bittersweet trip and we felt so blessed to have been able to spend that time with Stephanie.  Please keep her daughter, Courtney, and Stephanie’s family in your prayers.  I continue to work at a local winery and pen two blogs… Michael and I love living in Richmond VA.  Older son, Drew (Hood 12) is in grad school for a Masters in Athletic Training and younger son, Evan, is a “fourth year” at UVA.  Would love to hear from you all… email me or reach me via FB anytime!

Happy Summer to the HoodLums of 1986!  Hope everyone enjoys all that goes with sunshine and family… and thanks to all who responded to my “all call” via email and FB for news.  And now, here’s our class news:

Beth Beans Gilbert visited with Celeste Strunk Haghani in London over Thanksgiving. Celeste has three children (Joshua, Mark, and Jessica) and they were celebrating Mark’s Bar Mitzvah.  Beth has a freshman and sophomore at The George School: daughter Alexandra is running Varsity track while son Christopher is playing Varsity baseball.  Beth completes her family with Tyler (7th grade) and Paige (4th grade) while still working at family’s growing automobile business.  She sees Kara Dunn Keiser regularly (Kara has son Will and daughter Ava) and also keeps in touch with Susan Walts Smith via FB.  Susan’s son will be headed to FCSU in the fall.

Josie Espino Calix popped in to say “My daughter Anna Lisa got married to a wonderful man!”.  Love those happy little messages, Josie!  Kellye Greenwald is now living in Florida, working at Walt Disney World in the Research Department, specifically Field Operations, where she is completely blonde, has a lovely tan, still baking cookies and singing karaoke in her spare time!  Sheila Guth Snyder also posted a quick update: “My oldest daughter Alyssa graduated with her Associate’s degree in x-ray making her the third generation in the profession.  My twins, Stephanie and Andrea graduated from high school and are heading to college.”  Great news, Sheila!

Chrysti Hogan wants everyone to know that Marriage Equality is gaining ground with 3 more states within 2 weeks!  Exciting!  Jacquie Hollands wrote in to say that she has re-invented herself once again! She has joined the Corporate Responsibility Team at EMD Millipore and is now the Program Manager for Engaging Customers in Recycling Programs. She’s back on the east coast in the Boston area and gets together with Margaret Bushwaller Powers (86), Ann Barry Mitchell (86) and Eleanor Chisholm Landauer (86). She also was recently visited by Melanie Carroll Psaltakis (85)while she was in Boston for Yoga Teacher training.

Dana Humphreys Acock graduated from the Ohio State University with her MSW and recently completed an internship at Columbus Crime and Trauma Assistance Program.  She’s now trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) which is used with great success to help trauma patients.  She credits Hood for preparing her to think analytically and write well.  She’s taking the summer off to be with her boys (Chris, 13 and Matthew, 10) but is headed to Italy for an anniversary trip with hubby, Mitch, in August!  Drink a toast for us while you’re there, Dana! Dagmar Kolarik wrote in to share that she is married with two children (Petra, 33 and Thomas, 21) and two grandchildren (Natalia, 3 and Dominic, 10 months).  Dagmar has been the owner of Dagmar’s Décor in Frederick (fabricating custom home furnishings such as draperies, cushions, and bedding) for 11 years, so please think of her shop when you’re looking.

By far, the most thorough update came from Mari Padilla-Spina.  Mari continues to do medical malpractice consulting work which provides her the flexibility to spend time with both Alexa (16) and Nicholas (12). Both kids are very active in their respective activities. Husband, Steve, completes our puzzle!  Gina Oliveros recently hosted a Hood girl’s weekend in her beautiful Ft. Lauderdale home.  In addition to Gina and I, Maribel Martinez ’87, Kim Burns ’87, Khateeta Emerson, Nanette Rosario ’86 and Maritza Bido ’86 joined us. It was an incredible weekend that started off with Maritza surprising everyone, followed by treats by the pool to catch up.  A spa day allowed everyone to be pampered while laughing and even eating those cucumbers that were intended to be put on their eyes… so fun!  Mimosas back at Gina’s house, coupled with lots of good food, wine, and girlfriend time, offered everyone a chance to reminisce over crazy, fun, Hood days.  Mari is thankful to Hood College for bringing them all together and for giving her the best friends one can only dream of.   I can totally relate, Mari!

In related news, the most fun “are-you-kidding-me” post came from Elizabeth Shimer Murphy, when she wrote that her daughter, Ryan, will be attending camp this summer at the Naval Academy – she’s starting her D-1college quest and is considering Navy!  Congrats to Beth’s older daughter, Evan, who has committed to Oregon for lacrosse after she graduates in 2014 (Go Momma Duck!).   Beth’s mother, Judith Washko Shimer ’63 has defied all odds in her fight (YEA!!) with ovarian cancer and is doing great, so everyone’s looking forward to spending summer at the Jersey Shore.  Beth’s youngest daughter, Bryn, hits middle school next year – she also plays lacrosse and takes voice lessons (her angelic soprano was NOT inherited from her mother).  While Cali life is great, Beth thinks she sees a few puppies in her future and sends her love to all.

Dixanne Sturr posted that she just visited Hood with her daughter, who might be a Blazer in the Fall of 2014.   Gemmi Teleki and son, Arpad, are doing well in Austria.  We send our deepest condolences to Gemmi and her sister Ibi Teleki Sofillas ‘87 on the death of their father this year.  Arpad turns 8 in June and Gemmi enjoys teaching her 2nd graders English, using popular shows like Glee to get them excited!  Another FB post came from Elvy Vieira, saying “My oldest daughter Mariana graduated with BS in Biology from Montclair State University! Yay!”

As for me, I am now the event coordinator for a local winery and write both a personal blog (www.beatitudesofmylife.wordpress.com) and a work/wine-related blog (www.fromthebottomofawinebottle.wordpress.com).  I’m still shooting sporting events for my photography business (www.alisportshots.com) and love following the escapades of my husband and boys.   My older son, Drew Althouse ’12, started his Masters of Athletic Training at Shenandoah University and is expecting to complete his program in the spring of 2015 while my younger son, Evan, will be a fourth year at UVA, majoring in math.  It’s a crazy life, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hope to continue to hear from you all whenever you have a moment!  Feel free to email me (alison86@verizon.net) or send me a Facebook message anytime.  With this new platform, I can add and change things at will, so we can have some fun keeping up with one another throughout the year.  So excited to hear from more of you, more often!
